Ed Jernigan Dept. of Systems Design Engineering, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, N2L 3G1 [email protected] ABSTRACT We consider nite element basis functions for local nonlinear image restoration. The high dimensionality of the problem requires symmetry assumptions to make the lter design process computationally feasible. In contrast to polynomial lters, nite element lters are fast to evaluate and train, and handle outliers well. Preliminary results are superior to Lee's local adaptive lter.
